RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Aug. 28
Girls’ tennis: Wausau Newman 5, Rhinelander 2
The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team dropped a Great Northern Conference dual against Wausau Newman 5-2 Thursday at the RHS tennis courts.
Rhinelander’s wins came in straight sets at No. 2 doubles with Willow VanDenHeuvel and Eva Heck and No. 3 doubles with Wilow Mutter and Addy Currie. Newman swept the four singles matches in straight sets and also won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles.
Rhinelander (5-7, 11-1 Great Northern) hosts Merrill, Ashland and Ironwood, Mich. in a quadrangular meet on Friday.
Cross country: RHS boys 5th/12, girls’ 5th/6, Hodag Invite
The Hodag cross country team opened the season with its home invite in front of RHS on Thursday. The Hodag boys were 5th overall in a 12-team field while the Hodag girls were fifth among six scoring teams.
Avrom Barr paced the Hodag boys, finishing fourth in a field of 142 runners, covering the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 4.3 seconds. Jackson Weinzatl was 16th for the Hodags, followed by Jonathan Campbell in 31st, Matthew Woosdin 48th, and Wyatt Crowell in 55th.
Macy Myers ran to a runner-up finish on the girls’ side, coming home with a time of 20:57.9. Kara Monk finished 21st, followed by Gabby Wanta in 27th, Noelle Mayo in 28th and Gretchen Fiebke in 30th.
The Hodags return to action Tuesday as they race in the Mosinee Invite at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau.
