RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Aug. 26
Boys’ soccer: New London 8, Rhinelander 0
The RHS boys’ soccer team dropped its season opener 8-0 at New London on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs led 3-0 at halftime and scored five times in the second half — including twice in the final minute of regulation. Shots were unofficially 44-4 in favor of New London.
Caden Ehrhardt played the first half in goal for the Hodags, making five saves. Eric Parish made six saves over the final 40 minute.
Rhinelander (0-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland Sept. 4.
Volleyball: Rhinelander 0-4, Stevens Point Invite
The RHS volleyball team lost all four of its matches Tuesday in the season-opening Stevens Point Invite.
Rhineladner dropped the opener in three sets to Berlin (22-25, 25-25, 15-7), and fell in straight sets to Stevens Point (25-15, 25-16), Northland Pines (25-10, 25-9) and Wisconsin Rapids (25-13, 28-26).
Freshman McKenzie Paulson led the Hodags with 10 kills on the day. Libbey Buchmann added eight kills, 23 assists and 15 digs and five service aces. Tori Stella had a team-high 19 digs and Olivia Ruetz had four blocks.
Rhinelander (0-4, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Wisconsin Dells Friday to begin a two-day tournament.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 1-2 Wausau West Invite
The RHS girls’ tennis team won one of its final three matches on Tuesday as it concluded the two-day Wausau West Invite.
Rhinelander defeated Shawano (5-2), but lost to Eau Claire North (6-1) and Wausau West (6-1).
Rhinelander swept doubles against Shawano with wins from Teagan Turcotte/Maddie Legrey, Willow VanDenHeuvel/Eva Heck, and Willow Mutter/Addy Currie. Sam Aschenbrenner and Lucy Evers added wins in the bottom two singles flights.
Evers got Rhineladner’s lone for the Hodags against Eau Claire North at No. 4 singles and Jordan Manske picked up a win at No. 2 singles against Wausau West.
Rhinelander (5-6, 1-0 Great Northern) hosts Wausau Newman on Thursday.
