On August 14, 2025, Jill Marie Funk passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at home.
She was born on December 1, 1960, in Stanley, to Jim and Joan Smoczyk. At the age of one, her family relocated to Rhinelander, where they established and operated Jim and Joan’s Bar. Following her graduation from Rhinelander High School, Jill explored various career opportunities before ultimately dedicating herself to a long-term endeavor as the co-owner and operator of Rhinelander Well Drilling, alongside her then husband of 35 years, Dean Funk. In 2024, they were able to pass down the business to their son.
Jill enjoyed doing various outdoor activities. She particularly valued her camping excursions with her sisters and family, which provided opportunities for bonding and exploring new campgrounds. She loved boating and enjoyed spending relaxing hours on her deck, tending to a variety of flowers. Jill discovered happiness in playing board games, card games, and solving puzzles, as these activities enabled her to bond with friends and family. When the months were cooler in northern Wisconsin, she eagerly sought warmer climates, going on trips with her family to escape the chill and embrace new places.
She is survived by her partner Bill Todd of Rhinelander; her daughter Nikki (Tyler) Loftus of Waukesha; her son Derek (Tessa) Funk of Rhinelander; three grandchildren Jackson, Ava, and Natalie; her siblings Joe (JoJo) Smoczyk of Hurley, Jan Wege of Rhinelander, Julie (Tom) Prahl of Rhinelander, and Jeff (Heather) Smoczyk of Rhinelander; her brother-in-law Craig Dotter of Rhinelander; many nieces and nephews; and many more great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Joyce Dotter, her brother-in-law Dale Wege, and her nephews Andrew Wege, Brandon Wege, and Timothy Dotter.
A celebration of Jill’s life will be held Saturday, Sept.6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Carlson Funeral Home. You may leave your private condolences for the Funk family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home, 715-369-1414, is serving the Funk family.
