Hodag Sports Club holds fourth annual Flurry Shoot, despite rain and storms
Inclement weather did not hamper the spirits of a few shooters who came out to match their wits against a flurry of clays at the eighth annual Hodag Sports Club Flurry Shoot. According to sports club spokesperson Sara Umland, the shoot started after the club went to the state shoot with the Rhinelander High School trap team. There was a flurry shoot there, and club members were hooked.
The flurry shoot involved five shooters at the line at a time, and 100 clays are launched randomly from seven throwers. The event normally draws 50-60 people, who would shoot for the full four hours of the event, but due to the weather, attendance was significantly reduced this year, unfortunately.
“Basically, you see all the birds flying and you have to kind of coordinate with your team how you’re reloading and shooting, and it’s whoever misses the least wins,” Umland said.
The first group to shoot that morning set the bar high, missing only 28 out of 100 clays.
Umland also said the current club house configuration, a staple of the sports club since the 1980s, will be torn down within the next two weeks as part of the club’s planned expansion and improvements. The sports club will be building a larger banquet facility in place of the club house, with the hopes to have the facility done in time for the club banquet in February. The venue will also be available to the public for rental for meetings, weddings and any other events.
