CORRECTION: In an article published in the Friday, Aug. 15 edition of the Northwoods River News, we incorrectly stated that the Northwood Golf Club Ladies’ League breast cancer awareness fundrasier raised $8,300 this year. The correct amount was $7,300, with $5,300 going to the James Beck Cancer Center at Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital and $2,000 going to the Ties that Bind Us in Tomahawk. We regret the error. The story below has been corrected.

The members of the Northwood Golf Club ladies golf league in Rhinelander once again teamed up with their colleagues from Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk earlier this month in support of breast cancer awareness. The result was the best in the event’s 17-year history.

According to event chairperson Carole Zierden, 56 golfers took part in a nine-hole scramble Tuesday, Aug. 5 at Northwood, featuring players from both leagues. Fifty-seven people participated in the dinner and raffles that followed the golf and, in total, the event brought in $7,300 for local cancer organizations.

Both the number of participants and the amount of money raised were records for the event —exceeding the marks of 51 players and $6,400 from 2024.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day for our Northwood-Inshalla annual breast cancer ladies league golf outing,” Zierden said. “It was a perfect day. I mean, we couldn’t have asked for anything that was any better.”

The group raised money through a contest held during the previous week’s men’s league outing at Northwoods, various contests and raffles during the event and a giving tree for monetary donations. Local businesses and individual donated prizes for the raffle events.

According to Zierden, proceeds from the event go to support the wig closet at James Beck Cancer Center at Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital as well as the Ties that Bind Us at Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital.

“We all enjoy golf and we all enjoy spending time together, and we come together for a special cause, as far as supporting breast cancer (awareness) and both of our hospitals at James Beck and through the Ties that Bind Us in Tomahawk,” Zierden said. “That’s basically our whole mission and what we try to do is to raise money to support cancer patients going through treatment at both of the facilities.”

This year’s event brought the total amount raised from the endeavor to more than $42,000 since its inception in 2009. Zierden said the league’s total contributions to James Beck have now reached $31,000.

Zierden thanked the players, the staff at Northwood Golf Club, the fellow members of her event committee and the businesses and individuals who supported the event.

“The support of the businesses, and the individual people in the community, and the members of the Northwood Ladies League and the members of the Inshalla league, all of these people show support through the raffles and gifts and door prizes that are brought in for us to use that night and we couldn’t be more blessed with the people who have always been in our corner,” she said.
