Smoke and smokescreens: Tiffany’s climate stance under fire by reader
To the Editor:
On this very smoky day, I’m wondering (indoors) if Congressman Tiffany has read — all of it — “Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report - Summary for Policymakers” by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. When asked about climate change, I’ve heard Tiffany say that the climate is always changing and then dismisses the subject as if the issue is insignificant. Various surveys show that young people, in particular, are deeply concerned. In my opinion, the willingness to brush off this concern is a deeply disturbing moral failure. If Tiffany refutes the report, then he should do it in a thorough, constructive way. If he doesn’t refute it, he must let us know what he plans to do to address climate change and show us action.
With respect to smoke, NASA says “Fire weather is becoming more common, and human activities are the main cause.” See science.nasa.gov/earth/explore/wildfires-and-climate-change and nifc.gov/fire-information/statistics/wildfires before the Trump administration shuts them down.
I also want to know if Tiffany supports the Trump administration’s decision to shut down globalchange.gov, stop publishing annual National Climate Assessment Reports, and remove public access to the reports already published. I’m an “outdoors guy” and I’m not sure what’s more depressing ... the loss of many, otherwise fine, summer days or the dismissal by Tiffany and others of well-founded concerns.
