Crash in Phelps results in local man’s death

A 32-year-old Rhinelander man died as the result of a single-vehicle accident in the town of Phelps on July 29. 

According to a press release from the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, the person reporting the accident said they saw a truck that struck a tree in a ditch off State Highway 17 near Hansen Hill Road at around 6:30 a.m.

First responders who arrived saw the vehicle was occupied by one male driver, Carter Wiegand. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. 

Personnel from Phelps Fire, Phelps Rescue, Phelps Ambulance, Vilas County Highway Department, Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office tended to the accident.

According to Weigand’s obituary received by The Northwoods River News, he was born in Mountain View, Ark., raised in Crandon, graduated high school there, and was living in Rhinelander working for White Construction at the time of his death.
