DeWaine “Butch” Mattek, Jr., beloved son of DeWaine Mattek Sr. and Darlene (Smith) Mattek, passed away on July 31, 2025, in Rhinelander, at the age of 60. Born on March 6, 1965, he was raised in Sugar Camp and graduated from Three Lakes High School in 1983. Butch was a Northwoods native with a deep connection to his community, music, and family.
Butch was a talented musician, best known as a skilled guitarist and vocalist, performing in regional bands such as Premier and Bad Influence. He brought classic rock and easy-listening tunes to life, known to play songs such as “Rock me gently” and “Unchained Melody”. His bandmates and local fans will remember him as a performer who played from the heart.
Also known for his love of dogs, a legendary sweet tooth and playful spirit. One of his recent joys was the excitement of becoming a great-uncle — a role he was thrilled to take on.
Butch is loved and survived by his brother, Michael Mattek and his niece, Samantha (Cody) Frankovis. He also leaves behind many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, bandmates, and friends — all of whom will remember him for his kind heart and musical spirit.
Butch brought people together and made strangers feel like friends. His melodies and presence enriched the Northwoods cultural fabric. His legacy will live on in every laugh shared, song played, and memory.
A celebration of life will be held September 6, at Play by Play Sports Bar in Rhinelander. Time and details to come. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories and honor his life the way he would have wanted — surrounded by music and love
May his songs continue to play in our hearts and his memory forever be a source of comfort and inspiration.
