Gary Leo Alsteen, 84, of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully July 30, 2025. Born Dec. 21, 1940, to Joseph and Gladys (Moore) Alsteen, After his schooling he served in the U.S. Army from 1963–65. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Rhinelander and on October 29, 1966 he married the love of his life, Georgia Ann Slack. They were blessed with 52 years of marriage. Gary worked in logging, construction, at Rhinelander Brewing Company, and later for Rhinelander newspaper companies until retirement.
A man with three great loves — his wife, his music, and baseball — Gary was lead guitarist and vocalist for the local band The Desperados and coached Little League and league baseball for many years. His humor, talent, and passion for the game (and a good guitar riff) will be fondly remembered.
He is survived by his children: Ann (Brad) Sarkauskas, Gary (Stacy) Alsteen Jr., and Clayton “CJ” Alsteen; “son/nephew” Christopher Eades, grandchildren: Noah (Andrea) Sarkauskas, Alexander Sarkauskas, Lily Alsteen, Seth Alsteen; great‑granddaughter: Leah Sarkauskas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife Georgia; parents; sister Marion Einemann; brothers Robert and Joseph Alsteen.
Visitation for Gary will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. until noon with funeral services following at noon, all at the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. Deacon Ray Ambrosius will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery. You may leave your private condolences for the Alsteen family at www.carlsonfh.com.
