Baseball: Lakeland 4, Rhinelander 0

Rhinelander’s bats were silenced Friday in a 4-0 shutout loss to Lakeland at Stafford Field.

The T-Birds nibbled away, scoring single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. Rhinelander’s best scoring chance came in the sixth when John Turek struck out with the bases loaded to end a rally. The Hodags had only four hits in the game — Sawyer Bishop had two of them — and struck out 12 times in the contest.

Conner Rappley took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Rhinelander (5-4, 2-2 Great Northern) travels to Merrill on Monday.

Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander at Stevens Point Invite

The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team took part in the first day of the Stevens Point Invite on Friday, losing to Oshkosh North, 6-1.

With an altered lineup, the Hodags’ lone win came at No. 2 doubles where Payton McCue and Karter Massey scored a 7-5, 6-2 victory. The Hodags’ No. 1 doubles pair of Aiden Ostermann and Michael Schiek fell in a match tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 3-10.

Play in Stevens Point on Friday was delayed due to rain. Play continues for the Hodags on Saturday.
