James Russell Willis

James “Jim” Russell Willis of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 4, 2025, at the age of ninety-five. A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Jim lived a full and joyful life.

Jim was born on November 4, 1929, in Rhinelander, to Ray and Grace (Miller) Willis.

He grew up in Rhinelander, where he graduated from Rhinelander High School, and later went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. There he met his future wife, Nancy Neuville of Fond du Lac, whom he married in April 1951. They were blessed with seventy years of marriage.

Jim was a successful businessman and an active member of the community. He co-owned Juday and Willis Feed and Paint Store before later serving as vice president at the First National Bank in Rhinelander, and subsequently at Valley Bank and Associated Bank. He generously gave his time and talents, contributing to civic life through his involvement with many organizations.

Jim found joy in hunting, fishing, skiing, golfing, and woodworking. He and Nancy loved traveling the world. He also loved playing cards, teaching his favorite games to his grandchildren and fellow residents at Freedom Village. Jim cherished time with family and was always ready with a warm smile and a clever joke.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nancy, his brother, William; and one great-grandchild. He is survived by his children, Catherine Willis-Owen, Thomas Willis (Rita), Mark Willis (Mary), and Steven Willis (Joan); his sister-in-law, Doris Willis; and his close friend, Ann; 14 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of love, humor, and resilience.

Jim will be missed by those who knew him.

A private family memorial will be held later this summer.
