RHS Sports recap: Wednesday, April 23
Baseball: Rhinelander 10, Tomahawk 3
Seth Nofftz, Rowan Wiczek and Sawyer Bishop each had three hits and drove in two runs Wednesday as the Rhinelander High School baseball team defeated Tomahawk 10-3 in Great Northern Conference play at Stafford Field.
The Hodags broke open a scoreless tie with five runs in the third and never looked back, adding another run in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth as they pounded out 16 hits in all.
Dylan Vanderbunt allowed a run on five hits and struck out six over six innings to earn the win. The Hatchets got a run off of him in the fourth and two off reliever Abe Gretzinger in the seventh.
Vanderbunt and Jackson Waydick added two hits each for Rhinelander.
The Hodags (5-3, 2-1 Great Northern) are set to host Lakeland on Friday.
Golf: Rhinelander 5th/9, Mosinee Open
The RHS golf team shot 345 on Wednesday and moved up into fifth place overall in the nine-team Mosinee Open at Wild Rock Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells.
The Hodags shot a 36-hole total of 691, which was only 18 strokes behind first-place Lakeland.
Brody Kowieski followed up an 81 on Tuesday with an 82 Wednesday and his 36-hole total of 19-over 163 was good enough for eight overall. Freshman Grant Gremban also shot 82 Wednesday to finish 10th overall at 167.
Hank Kowieski shot 89, Blake Petroff shot 92 and Chase West carded a 98 on Wednesday.
The Hodags are back in action Thursday at the Medford Invite.
