RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, April 22
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Lakeland 0
Lindsey Hoerchler scored in the sixth minute Tuesday night. That was enough to give the Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team a leg up in the Great Northern Conference standings as the Hodags defeated Lakeland 1-0 in Minocqua.
Hoerchler scored off a Vivian Lamers cross from roughly 12 yards away and, while Rhinelander had the majority of the play, that proved to be the lone goal of the match.
Rhinelander outshot Lakeland 17-6 in the match. Rylee Mickevicius made two saves in the shutout for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (5-3-0, 2-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Medford on Thursday.
Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 5, Lakeland 2
The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team passed an early season test in the Great Northern Conference, sweeping doubles and grabbing wins in the bottom two singles flights for a 5-2 win over Lakeland Tuesday at the RHS tennis courts.
Michael Schiek/Aiden Ostermann, Van Tulowitzky/Hart Hokens and Danek Koniar/Braydon Lorman were all straight-set winners for the Hodags in doubles, though Tulowitzky and Hokens needed a tiebreaker to claim the first set at the No. 2 flight.
Asher Rivord won in straight set at No. 4 singles and Calvin Loomis rallied for a 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory over Gage Bowe at No. 3 singles.
Rhinelander (6-0, 2-0 Great Northern) travels to Stevens Point for an invite Friday and Saturday.
Baseball: Mosinee 5, Rhinelander 1
Mosinee scored three times in the opening inning and then shut down the Rhinelander offense as the Hodag baseball team fell to the Indians 5-1 in Mosinee on Tuesday.
Mosinee tacked on single runs in the third and fifth for insurance while pitcher Zach Nechuta tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts. Dylan Vanderbunt was hit by a pitch and scored the Hodags’ lone run on an error in the top of the first inning. Conner Rappley broke up Nechuta’s no-hit bid on a one-out single in the fourth.
Jackson Waydick took the loss for Rhinelander, allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Abe Gretzinger worked a 1-2-3 sixth for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (4-3, 1-1 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk Wednesday.
Softball: Mosinee 15, Rhinelander 0
GNC-leading Mosinee scored in every inning as it run-ruled Rhinelander 15-0 in four innings Tuesday in Mosinee.
The Indians scored five times in the first inning, three in the second, six in the third and walked it off with a run in the fourth inning. Mosinee pounded out 18 hits in the game, including three home runs and 11 extra-base hits.
Rhinelander’s lone hit was a lead-off single by Kadyn Taylor in the fourth. Ava Busse struck out nine in three innings for Mosinee in the win. Aleece Johnson took the loss for Rhinelander, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits over two-plus innings for the Hodags. Kendall Vanney allowed fire runs on eight hits in an inning-plus of work.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Rhinelander, but was moved in a late call Tuesday due to wet field conditions.
Rhinelander (2-5, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Thursday.
Golf: Rhinelander 6th/9, Mosinee Open, Day 1
The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 346 on Tuesday and sat in sixth place in the nine-team Mosinee Open following the first round of play at Wild Rock Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells.
Brody Kowieski shot 81 on Day 1 to sit in sixth place overall. Blake Petroff was eighth, one stroke further back with an 82. Grant Gremban shot 85 and Hank Kowieski shot 95.
The tournament will conclude with the second day of play on Wednesday.
