Lake Tomahawk electors give OK to sell American Legion building
Lake Tomahawk electors, during the town’s annual meeting on April 15, gave the town board authorization to negotiate and sell the building that’s home to the Colin F. Schultz American Legion Post 318, 7986 Choate Boulevard.
“It’s not like we’re
selling it for profit.”
George DeMet, Lake Tomahawk town chairman
Town chairman George DeMet said there were roughly 30 people in attendance at the annual meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes.
He said the sale of the American Legion building, which sustained damages from a fire on Feb. 13, 2024, is being proposed to be sold to the American Legion Post 318 members for $1.
“It’s not like we’re selling it for profit,” he said of the building that was the original town hall prior to the Raymond F. Sloan Community Center being built. “We had been leasing it to them for a dollar and then when they had the fire over there … it was kind of a pain in the neck dealing with the insurance. So now they will be able to take it over and do whatever they want there.”
DeMet said he spoke with town attorney Greg Harrold recently and was advised a survey for the property needs to be completed next.
He said “it will be a period over a few months to get the transaction” complete.
Members of Post 318 were at the April 15 meeting, DeMet said, and expressed interest in wanting to purchase the building.
“It was a unanimous vote (among electors),” he said. “(Post 318 members) wanted it.”
