RHS Sports recap: Thursday, April 17
Baseball: Rhinelander 17, Crandon 3
The Rhinelander High School baseball team raced out a a big early lead and downed Crandon in five innings 17-3 Thursday afternoon in Crandon.
The Hodags scored twice in the first, three times in the second and blew the game wide open with a 10-run third. While the Hodags had only eight hits in the game, they took advantage of 10 Crandon walks and six errors.
Dylan Vanderbunt and Abe Gretzinger had two hits each for the Hodags while Vanderbunt, Jackson Waydick, Rowan Wiczek, Conner Rappley and Gretzinger drove in two runs each. Vanderbunt struck out seven and allowed two runs over three innings to earn the win. Vince White worked the final two innings, striking out four.
The Hodags (4-2, 1-0 Great Northern) host Tomahawk on Tuesday.
Softball: Rhinelander 15, Three Lakes 10
The Rhinelander High School softball team scored eight times in the sixth inning on Thursday to beat a 7-all tie and get by Three Lakes 15-10 on the road in non-conference play.
Rhinelander led 7-4 following a six-run second inning, but the Bluejays answered with a run in the fourth and tow in the fifth to tie it.
Aleece Johnson walked four times at the plate and drove in three runs. The Hodags, as a team, drew 16 walks in the game. Kendall Vanney collected a pair of hits and three RBIs and Kalyn Miller drove in two.
Johnson picked up the win, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on eight hits over seven innings with nine walks and 10 strikeouts.
Rhinelander (2-4, 0-1 Great Northern) hosts Wausau East on Monday.
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 7, Mosinee 0
Vivian Lamers scored four times Thursday night as the Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team cruised past Mosinee 7-0 in its Great Northern Conference opener.
Lamers scored four consecutive for the Hodags, scoring three times in the final seven minutes of the first half to give the Hodags a 5-0 lead at the break. She added another goal in the 53rd minute. Lindsey Hoerchler, Sophie Miljevich and Ella Miljevich added goals while Kiley Pooch chipped in three assists.
Rhinelander outshot Mosinee 46-0 in the contest. Rylee Mickevicius started and earned the win for the Hodags while Emalee Detienne played the second half. The game was suspended, and eventually called, in the 69th minute due to lightning in the vicinity.
Rhinelander (4-3-0, 1-0-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.
Track: RHS boys 3rd/10, girls 1st/10, Marathon Invite
The Hodag track team competed in its first outdoor meet of the season, the Marathon Invite Thursday evening. The Hodag girls took first in the 10-team meet while the Hodag boys came home third.
The Hodags had a number of individual highlights, however. Aila Bergman play a role in three of the four wins on the night for the Hodag girls. She swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and was on the winning 4x400 relay with Lucy Eddy, Olivia Ruetz and Macy Myer. Libbey Buchmann scored the win in the girls’ shot put.
On the boys’ side, the lone win came in the 4x800 relay with Shawn Denis, Jackson Weinzatl, Avrom Barr and Greyson Gremban.
Rhinelander returns to action next Thursday at the Medford Invite.
