RHS Sports recap: Monday, April 14
Baseball: Rhinelander 7, Northland Pines 6
Sawyer Bishop hit a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the sixth as the Rhinelander High School baseball team rallied for a 7-6 victory over Northland Pines in its GNC and home opener Monday at Stafford Field.
Bishop’s line drive to right plated Rowan Wizcek and Conner Rappley who had reached on an error and walked before him.
Dylan Vanderbunt worked 2 2/3 perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts to earn the win. He inherited a two-on, one out jam in the fifth after Pines had scored twice to take a 6-4 lead and chase Rappley from the mound. Rhinelander got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Vanderbunt, one of his three its on the day.
Rhinelander (2-2, 1-1 Great Northern) travels to Adams-Friendship on Tuesday.
Softball: Lakeland 18, Rhinelander 0
Lakeland scored 11 times in the third inning and defeated Rhinelander 18-0 in GNC softball play from Andrea Musson Field on Monday.
Lakeland also scored twice in the second and five times in the fourth. Saylor Timmerman threw four perfect innings for Lakeland, striking out nine.
Aleece Johnson took the loss for Rhinelander, striking out four over four innings.
Rhinelander (1-4, 0-1 Great Northern) travels to Northland Pines on Tuesday.
Golf: Rhinelander 6th/13, Randolph Invite, Day 1
The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 342 and sat in sixth place following the first day of the Randolph Invite in Wisconsin Dells on Monday.
Brody Kowiesk sat in 14th place after Day 1, shooting a round of 82 around Trappers Turn Golf Club. Hank Kowieski shot 83, Chase West carded an 88, Grant Gremban shot 89 and Blake Petroff shot 91.
The invite concludes Tuesday at Christmas Mountain Village Golf Course.
