RHS Sports recap: Saturday, April 12


Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 10, Jefferson 2; Lake Mills 4, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team came home second in the Lake Mills Quad on Saturday, defeating Jefferson 10-2 in the semifinals before losing to No. 2 (D4) Lake Mills 4-0 in the championship game. 


The Hodags dominated the morning game, outshooting Jefferson 24-4. Vivian Lamers and Sophie Miljevich each scored four times in the game, and the Hodags also got goals from Kiley Pooch and Ella Miljevich. 


Lake Mills led 3-0 after one half in the championship game and tacked on an insurance goal after halftime. Shots were 16-14 in favor of the Hodags in the contest. Rylee Mickevicius recorded one save against Jefferson and two saves against Lake Mills. 


Rhinelander (3-3-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) will open up GNC play at home on Thursday.


Softball: Edgar 5, Rhinelander 1


The Rhinelander High School softball team dropped a pitcher’s duel against Edgar 5-1 Saturday at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston. 


Edgar scored twice in the first, added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Hodags didn’t muster a run until a two-out RBI single by Ava Rathbun in the seventh.


Aleece Johnson took a tough-luck losses for Rhinelander, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts over seven innings. Only one of those runs was earned as the Hodag defense committed six errors. 


Rhinelander had only four hits in the game. Saige Mutter tripled in the seventh and scored the Hodags’ lone run. 


Rhinelander (1-3, 0-0 Great Northern) will open Great Northern Conference play at home against Lakeland on Monday.


Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 4, Wausau East 3; Rhinelander 4, Wausau West 3


The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team picked up a pair of wins in Wausau on Saturday, beating Wausau East and Wausau West by matching 4-3 marginal in non-conference play. 


Calvin Loomis got the deciding win for the Hodags against the Lumberjacks, rallying from down 9-6 in a match tiebreaker at No. 3 singles to defeat Julio Flores 6-2, 3-6, 12-10. Michael Schiek, playing with Payton McCue, earned the decisive win at No. 1 doubles against Wausau West, downing Derek Emon and Nathan Yang 7-5, 6-2. 


Loomis, Schiek and Asher Rivord (No. 4 singles) all went 2-0 on the day. Karter Massey picked up a win at No. 2 singles against East while Aiden Ostermann teams with Schiek in the win against the Lumberjack. Danek Koniar and Brayden Lorman added a win at No. 3 doubles against Wausau West. 


Rhinelander (4-0, 0-0 Great Northern) will open conference play at Ashland on Tuesday.
