RHS Sports recap: Saturday, April 5
Baseball: Rhinelander 7, Bloomer 0, forfeit; Barron 13, Rhinelander 3
The Rhinelander High School baseball team got in only one game Saturday at the Woodside High School Challenge in Mauston, losing to Barron 13-3.
The Golden Bears blew the game open late with five runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh. The Hodags trailed 6-0 through 4 1/2 innings but rallied to make it 6-3 on consecutive two-out RBI hits by Jackson Waydick, Seth Nofftz and Rowan Wiczek.
Waydick took the loss allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts over three innings. Rhinelander used five different pitchers in the game and the staff combined for 12 walks and two hit batters.
Barron outhit Rhinelander 9-8 in the contest. Wiczek and Dylan Vanderbunt each had two hits for the Hodags.
The Hodags were scheduled to play Bloomer prior to the Barron contest, but Bloomer withdrew from the tournament after playing Cumberland Saturday morning, handing the Hodags a forfeit win.
Rhinelander (1-2, 0-0 Great Northern) is scheduled to host Tomahawk Tuesday, but that game is in jeopardy of being postponed due to field conditions.
Girls’ soccer: Marshfield 3, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team lost on the road to Marshfield 3-0 in non-conference play Saturday.
Lauryn Katzenberger scored twice in the first half for the Tigers and Natalie Hebbring added a goal in the 61st minute.
According to statistics kept by the team, Rhinelander outshot Marshfield 18-8 and had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Keepers Rylee Mickevicius and Emalee Detienne split time in the defeat. Save totals were not available as of the time of this post.
Rhinelander (0-2-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) will host Stevens Point in non-conference play on Thursday.
Track: RHS at Wisconsin State Indoor Championships
The RHS track team had a handful of athletes compete Saturday at the Wisconsin State Indoor Championships in Whitewater. Neither the Hodag boys nor girls scored points in the meet, which brought in some of the top athletes across all three divisions in the state.
Junior Aila Bergman had the best showing for the Hodags. She qualified ninth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles (9.50 seconds) and wound up 12th overall after getting knocked out in the semifinals (9.67). Libbey Buchmann was 28th in the shot put and the Hodags took 27th in the 4x200 relay with Bergman, Violet Biolo, Olivia Ruetz and Lexi Bishop. Biolo was 80th in the 60 meters while Lucy Eddy and Ruetz were 47th and 56th in the 400.
Truman Lamers competed in three events on the boys’ side, taking 24th in the high jump, 51st in the triple jump and 87th in the long jump. The Hodags were 28th in the 4x200 relay with Ben Olson, Sam Zwaard, Matthew Haselton and Eagleson. Haselton was 63rd in the 400, Eagleson was 86th in the long jump while Olson and Zwaard were 131st and 132nd in the 60. Logan Schwinger and Reid Schultz were 47th and 74th, respectively in the boys’ shot put.
Rhinelander returns to action next Thursday and Friday in the Wausau West Indoor.
