Thomas John Habel, 79, of Rhinelander, passed away on February 9, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many.
Tom was born on April 12, 1945, to Louis and Marion Habel in Milwaukee. Many years later, it was there in Milwaukee that he met his wife, Sandy. They married on September 29, 1973 and together they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage. They moved to Rhinelander where they built a life full of love and cherished memories with their family.
A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Tom served from 1965 to 1971 as a Sergeant, stationed in London, England, where he worked as a structural and aircraft firefighter. After retiring from Heavy Machines Inc, he enjoyed the last 22 years working at Home Depot, where he formed lifelong friendships and took pride in helping others. Tom had a passion for classic cars, enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk, and found joy in the simple moments and tinkering in the garage. He will forever be remembered for his witty sense of humor that would always deliver the perfect one-liner that left everyone laughing.
Tom leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra; children Jessica Schnoor, Phillip (Nichole) Habel, and Megan (Brian) Olmsted; grandchildren Lucas Habel and his girlfriend Kendall, Artemis (Michael) Tarnowski, Caroline Habel, Henry Olmsted, and Carson Habel; siblings Peter (Nancy) Habel, Kathy (Jim) Warren, Liz (Rich) White, and Andrew Habel; and many other cherished family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Louis and Marion Habel.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, April 5, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 125 E. King Street, from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial Mass. Father Chris Kemp will officiate. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon following the service to share memories and celebrate Tom’s life.
Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Northwood’s National Cemetery in Harshaw.
