RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Sept. 21


Volleyball: Rhinelander 1-1 GNC Meet


The Rhinelander High School volleyball team split its matches Saturday in the first round of the Great Northern Conference tournament at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua.


The Hodags were swept by Medford 25-14, 25-14, 26-24 and then defeated Northland Pines in four sets 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21.


Libbey Buchmann had 24 kills — including 17 in the Northland Pines match — to pace Rhinelander. Kelsi Beran had 18 kills and Macey Schmoeger added 10 kills and eight blocks. Lucy Lindner had 45 assists.


Rhinelander (8-17, 1-4 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee on Tuesday.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 7th/18, Waukesha South Invite


The Rhinelander High School was the top-placing Division 2 school as it took seventh overall in the Blackshirt Invite at Waukesha South High School on Saturday.


The Hodags scored top-10 finishes with all of their relays. Rhinelander was seventh in the 200 medley relay with Celia Francis, Ella Heck, Ellyse Younker and Lily Thorsen and in the 400 freestyle relay with Younker, June Chiamulera, Francis and Vivian Lamers. The Hodags took 10th in the 200 freestyle relay with Thorsen, Chiamulera, Heck and Lamers. 


Individually, Francis finished eighth in the 100 backstroke, Younker was ninth in the 100 butterfly and Heck took ninth in the 100 breaststroke.


The Hodags (3-0 Great Northern) are back in action Thursday at Lakeland.


Cross Country: RHS boys 4th/10, girls 6th/7, Bill Smiley Invitational 


The RHS cross country team competed in the Bill Smiley Invitational Saturday in Wausau. The Hodag boys were 10th overall in Division 1 and fourth in the D1 Small classification while the Hodag girls were 16th overall in D1 and sixth in the D1 Small class.


Greyson Gremban paced the Hodag boys, taking 10th overall in D1 and sixth in D1 small with a time of 16 minutes, 52.0 seconds. Avrom Barr was 18th in D1 and 12th in D1 small (17:12.9). Brody Kowieski, Jackson Weinzatl and Michael Brunette rounded out the Hodags’ top five.


Brynn Teter was 14th in D1 small and 49th overall in D1 to lead the Hodag girls (22:05.4). Macy Myers, Kara Monk, Luna Grage and Gabby Wants were the rest of the Hodag top five. 


The Hodags are back in action Thursday at the Three Lakes Invite.
