RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 19


Boys’ soccer: Northland Pines 6, Rhinelander 1


The RHS boys’ soccer team lost to Northland Pines 6-1 Thursday night in Rhinelander. The Hodasg conceded two goals in the first half and four more in the second. 


Hart Hokens had Rhinelander’s only goal as Northland Pines outshot the Hodags 29-7. Caden Ehrhardt, in for the injured Barak Rappley, made eight saves in the loss. 


Rhinelander (3-5-1, 2-2-0-1 Great Northern) hosts Waupaca on Monday.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 125, Medford 45


The RHS girls’ swim team seized control of the GNC Thursday, winning all 11 events in a 125-45 romp over last year’s conference runner-up Medford at the Heck Family Community Pool.


The Hodags swept maximum points in the first four events as they lead 51-11 at the break and never looked back.


Ellyse Younker was a winner in all four of her events, taking the 200-yard freestyle, the 100 freestyle and swimming on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Lily Thorsen claimed the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, Rylee Mickevicius took the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, June Chiamulera won the 200 individual medley and Celia Francis won the 500 freestyle.


Rhinelander (3-0 Great Northern) travels to Waukesha for the Blackshirt Invite on Saturday.


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 6, Marshfield Columbus 1


The RHS girls tennis team swept singles on Thursday and claimed a 6-1 victory over Marshfield Columbus in the Hodag Dome.


Sam Aschenbrenner rallied after dropping a second-set tiebreaker 0-7 to defeat Marshfield Columbus’s Viv Graham 10-3 in the match tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to secure the sweep on that side of the lineup. Kelsey Winter, Karmen Lopez and Maddie Legrey won their matches in straight sets.


Rhinelander took Nos. 2 and 3 doubles with the teams of Evelyn Sawyer/Maya Patrick, and Willow VanDenHeuvel/Eva Heck.


Rhinelander (13-15, 3-3 Great Northern) hosts Medford Monday to wrap up conference play.
