RHS Sports recap: Friday, Sept. 20
Football: Tomahawk 21, Rhinelander 14
A short-handed Tomahawk team stunned Rhinelander Friday night. Brayden Larson hit Landyn Seymour for a 31-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal with 3 seconds remaining and the Hatchets stunned the Hodags 21-14 in GNC play in Tomahawk.
The Hatchets, playing without leading rusher and tackler Rex Reilly (shoulder), jumped ahead 7-0 on a Larson run to end the first quarter and took that lead to halftime after the Hodags failed to convert twice in the red zone in the second quarter.
A 36-yard run by Cyrus Leisure and a 6-yard score by Logan Schwinger put Rhinelander up 14-7 in the third, but the Hatchets answered back on a Cash Olsen run with 10:39 remaining.
After the teams traded fourth down stops and then punts, Rhinelander got the ball back at it’s own 37 with 1:43 remaining and drove down to the Tomahawk 14 before Truman Lamers was intercepted by Larson with 20 seconds left. Larson then caught a 30-yard pass to set up the late heroics.
Larson led Tomahawk with 127 yards and a score on the ground while Olsen had 41 yards and a score, and went 6 of 16 passing for 94 yards.
Lamers threw for 144 yards on 10 of 23 passing for Rhinelander. Myles Eagleson was the Hodags’ leading rusher with 56 yards on six carries.
Rhinelander (3-2, 1-2 Great Northern) travels to Antigo next Friday for the 90th Bell Game.
