RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Sept. 17

Volleyball: Lakeland 3, Rhinelander 0

The RHS volleyball team was swept in three sets by Lakeland Tuesday 25-20, 25-19, 25-18 in GNC play in Minocqua. 

Libbey Buchmann led the Hodag with eight kills and 14 digs, Kelsi Beran added four kills and two blocks, Lucy Lindner had 16 assists, Tori Stella had 10 digs and Cassidy Lindner recorded three service aces. 

Rhinelander (7-16, 0-3 Great Northern) will return to Minocqua Saturday for the first round of the GNC tournament, where it will face Medford and Northland Pines.

Girls’ tennis: Wausau Newman 5, Rhinelander 2

The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team split the singles matches Tuesday, but was swept in doubles as it lost 5-2 to Newman Catholic in GNC play in Wausau. 

Kelsey Winter was a 6-4, 6-4 winner for the Hodags at No. 1 singles over Reagan Herdrich. Maddie Legrey took No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1 over Newman’s Olivia Fox.

Rhinelander (12-15, 2-3 Great Northern) hosts Marshfield Columbus on Thursday.

Boys’ soccer: Wausau East 6, Rhinelander 0

The RHS boys’ soccer team was blanked Tuesday in non-conference play, 6-0 at Wausau East. The Lumberjacks scored three times in each half. 

Starting keeper Barak Rappley did not play for the Hodags as a precaution after getting kneed in the head in last Thursday’s loss at Lakeland and backup keeper Caden Ehrhardt left the game with an injury following a collision on Wausau East’s third goal. 

Senior Aiden Ostermann came in as the Hodags’ emergency keeper and stopped seven of the 10 shots he faced the remainder of the match. Ehrhardt had made two saves prior to leaving the contest. 

Wausau East outshot Rhinelander 30-9 and had a 15-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Hodags (3-4-1, 2-1-0-1 Great Northern) host Northland Pines on Thursday.
