RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Sept. 14


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 1-1, Hodag Invite


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team split its games Saturday in a home quadrangular, beating Black River Falls 3-0 before falling to Shawano 3-0 in the Hodag Dome.


The Hodags benefited from an early own goal against the Tigers and got scores from Hart Hokens and Aidan Lueder. The Hodags outshot Black River Falls 17-10. Barak Rappley made seven saves in the shutout.


Shawano scores twice on the Hodags, including a penalty kick, in the first half of the second game and tacked on one more goal early in the second. Shawano outshot Rhinelander 22-6. Rappley made three saves in the first half. Caden Ehrhardt finished the game in goal, recording five saves in the second half. 


The Hodags (3-3-1, 2-1-0-1 Great Northern) travel to Wausau East on Tuesday.


Volleyball: Rhinelander 3rd/8, Wautoma Invite


The RHS volleyball team won three of its five matches on Saturday and finished third in the eight-team Wautoma Invite. 


The Hodags went 2-1 in pool play, with a 25-17, 27-25 win over Three Lakes and a 26-24, 25-16 win over Lomira before falling to Weyauwega-Fremont 25-16, 25-17. Rhinelander lost to Wautoma 25-17, 25-14 in the semifinals before defeating Oshkosh North in the third-place match 26-24, 25-17.


Libbey Buchmann led the Hodags with 22 kills and added 26 digs. Macey Schmoeger and Kelsi Beran had 12 kills each. Lucy Lindner had 40 assists and Tori Stella recorded 44 digs and 12 service aces. 


Rhinelander (7-16, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/3, Hodag Relays


The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won nine of 10 events and edged out a deeper Wausau West squad by six points for the title in the Hodag Relays Saturday at the Heck Family Community Pool.


Rhinelander had 12 of its 14 swimmers win at least one race and 10 different swimmers win all three of their races. The Hodags took down a meet record in the 400-yard individual medley relay with Ellyse Younker, Millie Gruett, Lily Thorsen and Celia Francis. The team also established a record in a new event, the 400 medley relay, with Francis, Thorsen, Younker and Vivian Lamers. 


The Hodags are home again this coming Thursday to face Medford in GNC play.


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 2-0, Wausau West Invite


The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team won both of its matches Saturday as it finished 4-1 for the weekend in the Wausau West Invite. The Hodags defeated Wausau West 4-3 and swept Antigo 7-0 on Saturday.


Rhinelander mixed its lineup around, especially against Antigo. Karmen Lopez, Brooke Sisel, Maya Patrick and Maddie Legrey swept singles. Kelsey Winter/Dawsyn Barkus, Willow VanDenHeuvel/Maria Heck and Becca Brost/Sam Aschenbrenner made up the winning doubles combinations.


The Hodags got match tiebreak wins by Brost at No. 4 singles and by Lopez and Patrick at No. 2 doubles to help secure the Wausau West win. Legrey won at No. 2 singles and VanDenHeuvel and Heck added a win at No. 3 doubles. 


Rhinelander (11-14, 2-2 Great Northern) will be back in Wausau Tuesday to face Newman Catholic in a GNC dual.


Cross country: RHS boys 10th/14, girls 12th/15, Stevens Point Invite


The RHS boys cross country team came home 10th and the Hodag girls were 12th Saturday in the Stevens Point Invite at Standing Rocks Park in Plover.


Greyson Gremban paced the Hodag boys in 14th overall in a field of 107 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 16.0 seconds. Avrom Barr finished 16th for Rhinelander, Jackson Weinzatl was 56th, Michael Brunette was 78th and Wyatt Crowell finished 85th.


Brynn Teter led the Hodag girls again in 38th place ouf 109 runners. (22:35.0). Macy Myers was 61st, Kara Monk took 68th, Hayley Schiek was 78th and Sophie Miljevich finished 84th. 


The Hodags will be back in action next Saturday at the Bill Smiley Invitational in Wausau.
