RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 12


Boys’ soccer: Lakeland 3, Rhinelander 0


The RHS boys’ soccer team allowed three goals in the second half as it fell to Lakeland 3-0 in a battle for first place in the GNC Thursday night in Minocqua.


Dominic Gironella scored twice for Lakeland — first on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute and again in the 60th minute. Marshall Holmquist added a goal in the 74th minute.


Rhinelander goalkeeper Barak Rappley left the game and did not return after getting kneed in the head in the second half. He made five saves before exiting. Freshman Caden Ehrhardt made three saves after taking over for Rappley. Rhinelander was outshot 23-6 in the game and 11-3 in shots on goal.


The Hodags (2-2-1, 2-1-0-1 Great Northern) host Black River Falls and Shawano in an invite Saturday.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 130, Ladysmith 37


The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won all 11 races and cruised to a 130-37 win Thursday night over Ladysmith in GNC play at the Heck Family Community Pool.


The Hodags had four, three-event winners on the night. Ellyse Younker took the 200 freestyle, the 100 butterfly and was on the winning 200 medley relay. Celia Francis claimed the 100 freestyle, Ella Heck won the 100 breaststroke and bot were on the winning 200 medley and freestyle relays. Vivian Lamers took the 50 freestyle and was part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.


Emma Houg added individual wins in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle while Kiley Pooch won the 100 backstroke. 


Rhinelander (2-0 Great Northern) will host Clintonville and Wausau West Saturday in the annual Hodag Relays.


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 7, Phillips 0


The RHS girls’ tennis team swept Phillips Thursday in GNC play at the RHS tennis courts. 


Kelsey Winter, Karmen Lopez, Maddie Legrey and Sam Aschenbrenner did not drop a single game as they rolled to a singles sweep for the Hodags. The same was true at No. 1 doubles for Dawsyn Barkus and Brooke Sisel. Maya Patrick and Willow VanDenHeuvel were 6-1, 6-0 winners at No. 2 doubles and the tandem of Eva Heck and Teagan Turcotte staved off a set tiebreaker to win in straight sets at No. 3 doubles.


Rhinelander (8-13, 2-2 Great Northern) travels to Wausau today and tomorrow for a two-day invite.
