Football: Rhinelander 28, Wausau East 7
The Rhinelander High School football team came up with big plays on both sides of the ball in the second half as they scored 22 unanswered points and raced by Wausau East 28-7 Friday night at Mike Webster Stadium.
Truman Lamers, back after missing last week’s loss at Lakeland due to an eye injury, hit Abe Gretzinger for a 16-yard go-ahead touchdown on fourth down to open the second half and picked off Wausau East’s Davis Winter three times on defense.
The second interception set up an 86-yard score by Sam Zwaard late in the third quarter and the third sparked a 15-play, 91-yard drive that was capped off by a 3-yard plunge by Zach Germain midway through the fourth.
Sam Schoppe added a rushing touchdown in the first half as the Hodags racked up 426 yards of offense, including 370 on the ground. Zwaard finished with 123 yards on just seven carries, Cyrus Leisure had nine carries for 59 yards and Myles Eagleson, back from a week 1 shoulder injury, had 54 yards on nine carries. Lamers threw for 56 yards on 3 of 7 passing and added another 29 yards on four carries.
