RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Sept. 10


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 2, Mosinee 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team scored early and late Tuesday night as it defeated Mosinee 2-0 in Great Northern Conference play at Mike Webster Stadium.


Hart Hokens scored on a breakaway for Rhinelander in the fourth minute and Michael Schiek added the capper with 14 seconds to play in regulation. The Hodags won despite being outshot 10-7 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. 


Barak Rappley made six saves as he turned in his second shutout of the season.


Rhinelander (2-1-1, 2-0-0-1 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Thursday.


Volleyball: Antigo 3, Rhinelander 1


The RHS volleyball team grabbed a set from Antigo but faded late is it fell 3-1 to the Robins Tuesday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


After dropping the first set 25-17, the Hodags held on for a 26-24 win in the second. Antigo responded by taking the final two sets 25-9, 25-18.


Kelsi Beran had five kills to lead Rhinelander while Ava Rathbun and Libbey Buchmann had four each. Buchmann added 12 assists, 13 digs and a pair of service aces. Tori Stella had 12 digs and Macey Schmoeger added a pair of blocks.


Rhinelander (4-13, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Wautoma for an invite on Saturday.


Girls’ tennis: Lakeland 7, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team was swept by defending GNC-champion Lakeland 7-0 Tuesday at the RHS tennis courts. 


The T-Birds took all but one match in straight sets. Sam Aschenbrenner forced a match tiebreaker at No. 4 singles, but fell to Lakeland’s Ellie Baker 7-5, 5-7, 11-9.


Rhinelander (7-13, 1-2 Great Northern) hosts Phillips on Thursday.


Cross country: RHS boys 5th/12, girls 4th/13, Marshfield Invite


The Hodag boys’ cross country team finished fifth and the Hodag girls were fourth on Tuesday in the Marshfield Invitational at Wildwood Park.


Greyson Gremban tased the Hodag boys, taking fourth overall in a time of 17 minutes, 2 seconds. Avrom Barr also finished on the podium with a sixth-place showing (17:20). Jackson Weinzatl was 25th, Brody Kowieski was 31st and Wyatt Crowell was 52nd for the Hodag boys. 


Brynn Teter was 22nd (22:41) to lead the RHS girls, followed by Macy Myers in 23rd, Sophie Miljevich in 31st, Kara Monk in 32nd and Hayley Schiek in 40th. 


Rhinelander will compete in the Stevens Point Invite on Saturday.
