Jean Vanzo

Jean Vanzo, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday August 29, 2024 at Grace Lodge. She was born on August 4, 1928, in Iron Mountain, Mich., to Edwin and Josephine Wittock. Jean grew up and attended schools in Stambaugh, Mich. She graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science teaching degree in physical education. She taught at Rhinelander High School during the 1952 and 1953 school years. She taught one more year in Inkster, Mich. before marrying Ralph Vanzo and starting her family in Rochester, Mich.

Jean is survived by her eight children — Pat, Bruce (Susan), David (Barrie), Shirley (Joe Rogue), Sue (Dan Wadzinski), Brenda (Dave Robinson), Karen (Scott Johnson), Kenneth (Beth), nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren with one more on the way, sister Joyce Allison, brother Mark Wittock (Donna), and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1972 Ralph and Jean moved to Rhinelander and owned/operated The House of Sports until 1980. Jean went on to work at Hardware Hank and Trig’s bakery. Later on, with her welcoming smile and quick laugh, Jean was a favorite for handing out food samples at both Trig’s and Walmart for many years. She also volunteered at St. Joseph’s Thrift Shop and Rhinelander Senior Center; prepping meals for Meals on Wheels.

Jean cherished the lifelong friendships garnered her many bridge clubs. Family and friends enjoyed her knit dishcloths and mittens. There was always room for one more person at Jean’s large oval kitchen table, when it came to meals, cards, games, and gatherings.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, sister Delores, her parents, in-laws Turine and Anne Vanzo, sisters and brothers in-law, and nephews.
