RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 5


Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 3, Antigo 1


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team picked up its first win of the season Thursday, defeating Antigo 3-1 at home in Great Northern Conference play.


Goals by Michael Schiek and Charlie Johnson less than a minute a part in the first half gave the Hodags a 2-0 lead and Hart Hokens added an insurance goal for Rhinelander in the second half.


The Hodags outshot the Robins 21-4 in the match and had a 10-3 edge in shots on goal.


Rhinelander (1-1-1, 1-0-0-1 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee on Tuesday.


Volleyball: Tomahawk 3, Rhinelander 1


The RHS volleyball team took a set from last year’s GNC volleyball runners up, but fell in four at Tomahawk on Thursday.


Set scores were 25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 25-15. Ava Rathbun, Macey Schmoeger, Kelsi Beran and Willa Bureta all had four kills for the Hodags. Libbey Buchmann had three kills, seven assists and two service aces, Tori Stella had 15 digs and Schmoeger added a pair of blocks. 


Rhinelander (2-10, 0-1 Great Northern) travels to Ashland for an invite on Saturday.


Girls’ swim: Rhinelander 120, Antigo 48


The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won nine events Thursday and cruised to a 120-48 win in the Great Northern Conference opener at Antigo.


Vivian Lamers and Lily Thorsen were both three-event winners for Rhinelander. Thorsen took the 400-meter freestyle, the 100 breaststroke and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Lamers claimed the 200 freestyle and was part of the win in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.


Emma Houg won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, June Chiamulera took the 50 freestyle and Ellyse Younker won the 100 freestyle.


Rhinelander (1-0 Great Northern) hosts Ladysmith next Thursday.


Girls’ tennis: Medford at Rhinelander, ppd. 


Rain postponed a scheduled GNC girls’ tennis match between Rhinelander and Medford Thursday in Rhinelander. A make-up date was not immediately announced.


Rhinelander (7-12, 1-1 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland this coming Tuesday.
