RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Sept. 3

Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 0, Medford 0

The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team played Medford to a 0-0 draw Tuesday night in Medford. The Raiders took an extra conference point by winning a subsequent penalty kick shootout, 3-0.

Rhinelander’s best look in regulation came in the 54th minute when Medford’s Cale Schulz made a save on a Charlie Johnson header to the far post off a Michael Schiek corner kick.

Schulz denied Johnson in the first round of penalties before Karter Massey and Asher Rivord put their attempts off frame. Medford converted on all three of its chances in the shootout.

Medford outshot Rhinelander 18-11 and had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Barak Rappley made nine saves for the Hodags in the draw.

The Hodags (0-1-1, 0-0-0-1 Great Northern) host Antigo Thursday.

Girls’ tennis: Pacelli 4, Rhinelander 3

The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team swept doubles Tuesday, but could not overcome a strong Pacelli singles lineup in a 4-3 loss to the Cardinals in Stevens Point.

Pacelli took all four singles flights in straight sets. Rhinelander’s Dawsyn Barkus and Brooke Sisel rallied to take a match tiebreaker 13-11 at No. 1 doubles. Evelyn Sawyer/Maya Patrick and Teagan Turcotte/Willow Mutter were straight-set winners in the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles flights.

Rhinelander (7-12, 1-1 Great Northern) hosts Medford on Thursday.

The Hodag girls’ cross country team placed four runners in the top 20 Tuesday and won the Mosinee Invite at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau. Rhinelander fended off Medford by seven points to win with eight qualifying teams in the field.
