RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Aug. 31

Volleyball: Rhinelander 16th/24, Friendship Tournament

The Rhinelander High School volleyball team dropped all three of its matches Saturday in the silver bracket and finished 16th in the 24-team Friendship Tournament in Wisconsin Dells.

The Hodags were swept by Peshtigo (25-5, 25-22), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (25-14, 25-22) and Oshkosh North (25-12, 25-22). 

Libbey Buchmann totaled 31 kills and nine service aces over the two-day tournament, leading the team in those categories. She also had 27 assists, 23 digs and three blocks. Lucy Lindner had 36 assists and 21 digs, Tori Stella had 39 digs, Kelsi Beran had 13 kills and four blocks and Callie Hoerchler added 13 kills.

Rhinelander (2-9, 0-0 Great Northern) will open Great Northern Conference play at Tomahawk this coming Thursday.

Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 0-4, Wausau West Invite

The Rhineladner High School tennis team played two more matches Saturday in Wausau, falling to Chippewa Falls 4-3 and Pulaski 7-0. The Hodags were 0-4 in the two-day invite, including a 7-0 loss to Marshfield Friday that had not been posted prior to the publication of our Aug. 30 RHS sports recap.

All of Rhinelander’s wins in the invite came in doubles. Dawsyn Barkus and Brooke Sisel went 2-2 at No. 1 doubles. Evelyn Sawyer and Willow VanDenHeuvel also scored a pair of wins in doubles, teaming up to win against Madison Memorial Friday at No. 2 doubles. Sawyer and Maya Patrick, and VanDenHeuvel and Eva Heck were winners at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles Saturday against Chippewa Falls.

Rhinelander (6-11, 1-0 Great Northern) travels to Pacelli on Tuesday.
