YMCA of the Northwoods gymnasts win in Stevens Point
The YMCA of the Northwoods gymnastics team, featuring three returning members of the RHS gymnastics squad, took first place last Saturday in the Xcel Platinum division of the Stevens Point YMCA Invite.
Coach Kristina Aschenbrenner noted that Margherita Tibaldeschi, Karly Gillingham and Addison Fish all qualified for the state and national YMCA gymnastics competitions in the all-around with scores of 33.0 or greater. The remaining three gymnasts — Samantha Aschenbrenner, Eliza Halada and Alexis Smith — qualified for both meets in at least one event.
“It was a fun meet on Saturday. For the first meet of the season, everyone did really well,” she said. “The big accomplishment was earning first place as a team.”
Aschenbrenner noted the club’s next meet is Dec. 7 and in Medford and the program will have approximately one meet a month from December through April. The YMCA also has competitive Xcel Gold and Xcel Silver squads.
Little Hodags take the floor
The Rhinelander Basketball Association held a Little Hodags and Little Dribbles session in the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium Monday, Oct. 21. It marked the second week of the four-week session for aspiring basketball players in Grades 4K-3, with 200-plus participants, according to RBA officials. According to RBA, the sessions focus on introducing the game of basketball and developing the basic fundamentals such as ball handling, dribbling, passing and shooting through drills and fun games. Camp sessions are led by RHS boys’ and girls’ basketball coaches Derek Lemmens and Ryan Clark, with assistance from their coaching staffs, current players and volunteer assistants. Sessions run two days a week through Nov. 7.
