RNC mountain bikers conclude season
The Rhinelander Northwoods Composite mountain bike team wrapped up its 2024 season Sunday with the Red Barn State Championships at Trek Trails in Waterloo. The RNC partition of the squad, comprised of riders from school districts surrounding Rhinelander, finished 16th on the day and 18th overall out of 71 teams in Division 2. The Rhinelander High School partition was 46th Sunday and 34th overall in the final Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League standings.
Macy Lester, Cody Price and Henry Schmitz all recorded top-10 finishes both on the day and in the overall standings. Lester was 10th in the varsity girls race and vaulted to ninth in the final standings. Price took ninth Sunday in the boys’ JV3 category and was eighth in the final standings. Henry Schmitz was ninth in the freshman boys’ division Sunday and eighth overall.
Holden Schmitz took 22nd in Sunday’s varsity boys’ race and was 23rd in the final standings. William Gregersen was unable to finish the boys’ JV3 race and finished 24th in the final standings. In boys’ JV2, Everest Smith was 64th on the day and 52nd overall, while Michael Tredupp was unable to finish and took 49th in the final standings.
RNC riders who did not participate Sunday, but did at some point in the season included Emma Mankus (51st, girls’ JV2), Nathan Cordy (84th, boys JV2) and Miles Kirschbaum (91st, boys’ JV2).
In middle school action, the Hodags took spots 3-6 in the seventh grade boys’ race with Hans Sommer, Emmett Tuckey, Jacob MacFarland and Liam McKissack. Justin Liebscher finished 17th in the sixth-grade boys’ race.
Room still available for Saturday’s Run for Our Heroes 5K
The Rhinelander High School FBLA/DECA chapter will hold its inaugural 5K benefiting the Northwoods Veterans Homestead Saturday at CAVOC (Cedric A Vig Outdoor Classroom). Room is still available for last-minute and race-day entries.
Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Northwoods Veterans Homestead. Their mission is to help homeless veterans regain self-sufficiency through supportive services including: (but not limited to) food, shelter, case management, health and wellness, and employment assistance. Registration for the race is $20 for anyone under 15 years old and $25 for 18 years old and over. The fee includes: Registration, T-shirt, and lunch after the run. Award categories for the 5K include: Top 3 youth female, Top 3 youth male, Top 3 adult female, Top 3 adult male, and Top 3 seniors. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 26, with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m., the race at 10:15 and awards and lunch in the Rominsky Lodge to follow at 11:45.
FBLA/DECA (associations of business and marketing students) are student organizations with over 400,000 members worldwide. The purpose of FBLA/DECA is to provide learning opportunities for business and marketing students through chapter activities. It also prepares students for careers in business and business-related fields.
Other community sponsors for the event include RIPCO Credit Union and Utzinger Custom Finishes. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the participants throughout the course as everyone will enjoy the scenery of autumn in the Northwoods on the beautiful CAVOC trails.
Noon time hockey looking for players
The Noontime hockey program is calling on players who want to lace up their skates Tuesdays at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. The group will take the ice from noon to 1 p.m.
While the league is geared toward players age 60-and up, any adult-aged skaters are welcomed. Games may either be half-ice 3-on-3 or full-ice 5-on-5 based on participation.
