JV football downs Medford

The Rhinelander High School football team used a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Medford 18-14 Monday, Oct. 14 at Mike Webster Stadium. Down 14-12 after Medford scored a touchdown with 6:11 to play, the Hodags marched down the field and converted on fourth and 11 from the Medford 31 as quarterback Abe Gretzinger hit Kaleb Zwaard over the middle for the go-ahead score.

Icebreaker tourneys a success


    The Rhinelander Ice Arena hosted the second weekend of its Icebreaker 3-on-3 hockey tournament Oct. 12 and 13. According to an RIA Facebook post the tournament drew roughly 350 players from the Mite (U8) through Bantam (U14) levels. Pictured, teams face off during one of the Peewee games. JWMS runners conclude season

The James Williams Middle School cross country team rounded out its season Tuesday with the Wisconsin Valley Conference meet at Standing Rocks Park near Plover. 

The Hodag girls finished eighth in the 12-team field, led by eighth-grader Noelle Mayo, who took 25th in the field of 190 runners, completing the 3.2-kilometer course in 14 minutes, 9 seconds. Jade Chiamulera was 33rd for JWMS, Quinn Stinebrink took 39th and Noella Tulowitzky was 47th. The top 50 finishers received awards in the race. Rounding out the Hodag scorers were Helen Burning in 61st, Olivia Eades in 71st, Natalie Dellenbach in 88th and Marina Karwoski in 101st.

The Hodag boys ended up ninth on the day. Channing Waksmonski (21st, 12:17) earned a ribbon for the Hodags. Espen McMahon was 63rd, Casey Waksmonski took 64th, Max Cahee was 85th, Jacob Baumann was 110th, Ryder Clark was 76th and Patrick Sparks was 152nd for JWMS. 

The team also competes in the Hatchet Invite in Tomahawk last Thursday, with the Hodag girls taking second and the boys finishing fourth.

Chiamulera (11th), Stinebrink (12th), Tulowitzky (13th), Charlotte MacIntyre (14th) and Beuning (21st) were the top five for the Hodag girls. Channing Waksmonski (5th), McMahon (9th), Cahee (26th), Casey Waksmonski (28th) and Baumann (36th) led the Hodag boys.
