RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Oct. 17

Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 130, Colby/Abbotsford 40


The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won all 11 events as it defeated Colby/Abbotsford 130-40 at the Heck Family Community Pool.


Senior Ellyse Younker, in her final home meet, led the Hodags with a four-win night She took the 200-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly and was on the winning 200 and 400 relay squads. Ten Hodags found the winner’s circle in call. Celia Francis claimed the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, Vivian Lamers won the 50 freestyle, Ella Heck took the 100 freestyle, Kyree McMahon won the 500 freestyle and Lily Thorsen won the 100 breaststroke.


The Hodags finished conference play at 7-0 and will have sole possession of first in the GNC going into next Friday night’s conference meet.


Rhinelander travels to Shorewood Saturday for the Small School State Invite. 


Boys’ soccer: Northland Pines 2, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team lost to Northland Pines 2-0 Thursday in the regular season finale in Eagle River. 


Cody Vojta and Tyler Vojta scored just over six minutes apart in the second half, which proved to be the difference in the match. The Eagles had a 24-9 edge in total shots in the match and an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Barak Rappley made seven saves in the loss for Rhinelander. 


The Hodags (4-9-2, 3-5-1-1 Great Northern) finished fourth in the GNC after Mosinee rallied to defeat Medford 3-2 later Thursday evening. Rhinelander will travel to New London to open the WIAA tournament next Thursday.


Volleyball: Rhinelander 3, Crandon 0


The Rhinelander High School volleyball team fended off Crandon rallies in each set Thursday night to sweep the Cardinals in the regular season finale 26-24, 25-22, 25-22 in Crandon.


Kelsi Beran paced the Hodags with 14 kills. Libbey Buchmann had seven kills, 14 digs and four aces. Lucy Lindner had 18 assists and five aces and Tori Stella recorded 21 digs. 


Rhineladner (12-26, 2-10 Great Northern) will open the WIAA tournament at Merrill next Tuesday.
