RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Oct. 12

Volleyball: Rhinelander 0-3, Great Northern Conference Meet No. 2

The Rhinelander High School volleyball team was swept in all three matches it played Saturday in the second leg of the GNC tournament in Medford. The Hodags lost to Antigo 25-20, 25-15, 25-16; Lakeland 25-9, 25-13, 25-13 and Mosinee 25-14, 25-22, 25-15. 

Libbey Buchmann finished with a team-high 20 kills and 34 digs on the day, Kesli Beran added 17 kills and three blocks, Lucy Lindner had 37 assists and three service aces and Tori Stella added 31 digs. 

Rhinelander (11-25, 2-9 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk on Tuesday.

Cross country: RHS boys 1st/5, girls 2nd/4, Tomahawk Invite

The Rhinelander High School cross country team posted some of its fastest times of the season Saturday in the Hatchet Invite at Tomahawk High School.

The Hodag boys placed five runners in the top 13 as they won their third straight meet while the Hodag girls had five in the top 15 as the finished runner-up behind the hosting Hatchets. 

Avrom Barr came home second overall on the boys’ side for Rhinelander, covering five kilometers in 16 minutes, 37.3 seconds. That was eight seconds ahead of teammate Greyson Gremban who finished third. Brody Kowieski took fifth, Jackson Weinzatl was eighth and Michael Brunette finished 13th. 

On the girls’ side, Macy Myers led the way in seventh overall (22:18.4). Luna Grage finished ninth, Sophie Miljevich was 11th, Hayley Schhiek was 14th and Kara Monk finished 15th. 

Rhinelander is back in action next Saturday at the GNC meet hosted by Northland Pines in Eagle River.
