RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Oct. 10
Football: Medford 43, Rhinelander 13
The Rhinelander High School football team could not keep up with Medford Thursday night as it gave up 448 yards, all on the ground, and lost to the Raiders 43-13 in Medford.
Paxton Rothmeier took over the lead for the state rushing title thanks to a 311-yard night on just 19 carries for the Raiders. He had scores of 12, 26 and 60 yards in the first half as the Raiders built a 30-0 lead at the break and then scored from 63 yards out on the opening play of the second half.
Evan Wilkins added 107 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for Medford. The Hodags were held to negative yards rushing before finally finding some traction against Medford’s reserves in the second half. Tyler Chariton scored from four yards out in the third quarter and Sam Zwaard added a 22-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.
Zwaard finished with 37 yards rushing while Chariton had 30 yards rushing and 29 yards receiving. Truman Lamers was 5 of 12 passing for 70 yards.
The loss all but mathematically eliminated the Hodags (3-5, 1-5 Great Northern) from playoff contention. Rhinelander closes the regular season at home against Merrill Oct. 18.
