Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander T6th/9, WIAA Division 1 subsections
The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team managed to win three matches Monday as it hosted a WIAA Division 1 subsectional tournament at the RHS tennis courts and the Hodag Dome.
The No. 2 doubles team of Evelyn Sawyer and Maya Patrick won two of those matches and were the only Hodag entry to advance to the sectional round of the tournament, after defeating Medford’s Lilly Holmes and Bailey Metz 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 in the second round Monday.
Eva Heck and Willow VanDenHeuvel won a match tiebreaker in their opening round at No. 3 doubles but were swept in straight sets in the second round ending their season. Rhinelander lost their first match in every other flight, with straight-set losses for Kelsey Winter at No. 1 singles and Dawsyn Barkus/Brooke Sisel at No. 1 doubles costs those two entries a berth to sectionals.
Sawyer and Patrick will be guaranteed two matches Wednesday at sectionals in Eau Claire.
A full report will be published in Friday’s River News.
