RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Oct. 3


Boys’ soccer: Antigo 1, Rhinelander 0


For the first time as a member of the Great Northern Conference, the Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team lost to Antigo, falling 1-0 Thursday at Listle Field. 


Johnny Wissbroecker screed for the Robins in the fourth minute and it held up the remainder of the match, despite Rhinelander finishing the game with a 26-14 edge in total shots. 


Antigo failed to convert penalty kick chances seconds apart in the 50th minute and the Hodags played the final 30 minutes down a man after Michael Schiek was sent off with a direct red card in the 51st minute. 


Barak Rappley made seven saves n the loss for Rhinelander. The Hodags (3-7-1, 2-3-0-1 Great Northern) will host GNC-leading Lakeland on Tuesday


Volleyball: Medford 3, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School volleyball team was swept by Medford 25-12, 25-13, 25-14 Thursday night in Great Northern Conference play at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 


Macey Schmoeger and Kelsi Beran had three kills each to lead Rhinelander. Lucy Lindner tallied 14 assists, Tori Stella had 15 digs and Kayla Skubal had a pair of service aces. 


Rhinelander (11-22, 2-6 Great Northern) is idle until the second leg of the GNC tournament Oct. 12 in Medford.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 135, Tomahawk 31


The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won all 11 events Thursday is it cruised to a 135-31 win on the road at Tomahawk.


Vivian Lamers and June Chiamulera were four-event winners for Rhinelander. Lamers took the 500-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststorke, Chiamulera won the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and both were on the team’s winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.


Celia Francis took the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and Emma Houg won the 200 freestyle as part of three-win nights for both swimmers. Ellyse Younker added a win in the 100 freestyle.


Rhinelander (5-0 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee next Thursday.


Cross Country: RHS boys 1st/5, girls 3rd/4 Medford Invite


The Rhinelander High School cross country team placed four boys in the top nine Thursday as it won the five-team Medford Invitational. The Hodag girls finished third on Thursday. 


Greyson Gremban was the individual runner-up Thursday, covering the 5K course in 16 minutes, 46.9 seconds. Avrom Barr was third, Brody Kowieski finished fifth, Jackson Weinzatl was ninth and Michael Brunette came home 12th. 


Brynn Teter led the Hodag girls, coming home third with a time of 21:49.5. Kara Monk took eighth, Sophie Miljevich was 10th, Hayley Schiek was 12th and Luna Grage finished 19th. 


The Hodags are back in action Tuesday at the Northland Pines Invite in Eagle River.
