Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 39, D.C. Everest 33

Aubryn Clark and Kelsey Winter combined for 30 points as the Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team fended off D.C. Everest 39-33 in a defensive struggle Friday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

The Hodags never trailed in the game, but never led by more than 10 as both teams struggled from the floor and had issues turning the ball over.

Everest had cut a 10-point Rhinelander lead down to two with 8:35 remaining before the Hodags regained control on a 7-0 run. Clark finished with 16 points and scored Rhinelander final five points after Everest pulled within 34-28 with 4:33 left. Clark was held to 5 of 17 shooting on the night but made four of her final six attempts from the field.

Winter had 14, including eight in the first half that helped the Hodags to a 15-11 lead at the break. She fouled out with less than a minute to play.

Kirsten Hall, who scored 36 last year when Everest defeated Rhinelander in overtime, was held to 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting. Grace Sandquist added nine points for the Evergreens, who shot 13 of 31 from the field and committed 27 turnovers.

JaLyn LaChapelle added five points off the bench for Rhinelander, which finished the night 34% from the floor (16 of 47).

Rhinelander (2-1, 0-0 Great Northern) hosts Wausau West Saturday evening.

Due to an early Thanksgiving weekend deadline, a full report will be published in the Friday, Dec. 6 edition of the River News.
