Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 3rd/34, WIAA D2 state swim meet

The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team had an individual state champion and 10 podium finishes, but it was not enough for the team to defend its WIAA D2 state title as the Hodags finished third at the state meet in Waukesha.

Celia Francis repeated as the state champion in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2 minutes, 5.34 seconds, winning the event by two seconds over Stoughton’s Cheyenne Borroughs. She also came home second in the 100 backstroke for the second year in a row.

The Hodags placed in the top three in all three relays, taking second in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays and third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Vivian Lamers, swimming out of the first heat in both of the sprint freestyle races won her heat and finishing on the podium, taking fifth in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle. Ellyse Younker took fourth in the 100 butterfly, Rylee Mickevicius took fifth in the butterfly and Ella Heck finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Whitefish Bay won eight events and claimed meet with 360 points. Madison Edgewood was second with 270 and the Hodags were third with 251.
