Eighth graders visit Nicolet for College and Career Day
Hundreds of local eighth-grade students explored their future careers at Nicolet College in October.
Students traveled for a day of learning at Nicolet College from Crandon, Mercer, North Lakeland School, Wabeno, Phelps, Elcho, Rhinelander, Minocqua-Hazelhurst-Lake Tomahawk, and Nativity Catholic School.
The event opened with a presentation highlighting the importance of understanding one’s personality type when considering future careers.
A theme of the day was planning for multiple careers, reflecting the idea that the average person will change careers multiple times in their lives.
Nicolet College instructors then inspired the students’ imagination through demonstrations of fire extinguisher safety, robots for manufacturing, patient simulators for nursing, fashion shows, flambé cooking techniques, and critical thinking and problem solving.
“There are many paths for students after high school. They can go directly into the workforce, do an apprenticeship, enroll in college, or join the military,” said Nathan Zorn, dual credit coordinator at Nicolet College.
“Learning about college and career options before high school can help students identify a preferred career pathway and be prepared to select relevant high school classes. We want students to know that Nicolet College can help them develop the knowledge and skills to succeed, whatever path they choose,” added Zorn.
