RHS Sports Recap: Thursday, May 23
Track: RHS girls T-10th/32, boys T-28th/30, WIAA Sectionals
The Rhinelander High School girls’ track team advanced three entries through to the WIAA state track meet during a Division 2 sectional Thursday in Colby.
Aila Bergman advanced with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles, Libbey Buchmann went through with a fourth-place finish in the discus and the 4x100 team of Lena Timphus, Violet Biolo, Olivia Ruetz and Lexi Bishop finished fourth.
Bergman broke her own school record in the 300 hurdles, with a time of 46.70, but that was only good enough for fifth in the sectional. Based on results from across the state, she unofficially ended up 0.02 seconds shy of earning a special exemption into the state meet as one of the top eight performances overall.
Elsewhere the Hodags girls took 11th in the 4x400 while Buchmann was 13th in the shot put. On the boys’ side Myles Eagleson took seventh in the long jump while Logan Schwinger and Reid Schultz were 11th and 12th, respectively in the shot put. The Hodags were ninth in the 4x2000 and 10th in the 4x100.
The WIAA state meet will be held May 31 and June 1 in La Crosse.
Baseball: Ashland 3, Rhinelander 1
Ashland scored three times with two outs in the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference as the Oredockers defeated the RHS baseball 3-1 in the opening round of the WIAA tournament Thursday in Ashland.
Rhinelander’s lone run came in the top of the first as Dylan Vanderbunt bunted himself aboard and later scored on an error. The Hodags struck out 12 times in the game and were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Ratty took the tough-luck loss for the Hodags. He carried a one-hit shutout into the fifth before the Oredockers’ two-out rally. He struck out five, walked four and gave up one earned run. Vanderbunt worked a scoreless sixth for Rhinelander, allowing one hit.
The Hodags ended their season with a 1-19 record.
