RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, May 21

Girls’ soccer: Lakeland 1 (3), Rhinelander 1 (2)

The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team tied GNC-champion Lakeland in the regular season finale 1-1 Tuesday afternoon in Minocqua. Lakeland took a penalty kick shootout, 3-2 for an extra conference point.

Both goals came off of free kicks. Josie Wentland scored for Lakeland in the 15th minute, a tally that was canceled out by Sophie Miljevich in the 60th for Rhinelander.

Sophie Miljevich and Vivian Lamers had successful attempts for Rhinelander in the shootout. According to team stats, Rhinelander outshot Lakeland 22-10 and had a 12-6 edge in shots on goal.

The Hodags (11-2-4, 6-1-1-2 Great Northern) will open WIAA tournament play at home against Shawano next Thursday.

Golf: Rhinelander 8th/8, WIAA Regionals

The Rhinelander High School golf team took last in a weather-plagued WIAA Division 1 regional Tuesday in Marshfield. 

The Hodags shot 176, only five strokes shy of advancing, in a meet that was suspended twice due to weather before being shortened to nine holes.

Brody Kowieski tied four fourth overall and punched an individual berth to the sectional round with a 3-over round of 39. Sam Schoppe missed a four-foot par putt on his final hole that would have put him in a playoff for the final qualifying spot. He shot 43 to miss the cut by one. Blake Petroff shot 45, Hake Kowieski had a 49 and Chase West shot 51.

Sectionals take place next Tuesday in Hudson.
