RHS Sports recap: Monday, May 20
Track: RHS boys 6th/9, girls 6th/9, WIAA regionals
Both the Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ track teams finished sixth Monday in a WIAA Division 2 regional in Rice Lake. From that event, the Hodags had 11 entries — 6 on the girls’ side and 5 on the boys’ side — advance to sectionals.
Sophomore Libbey Buchmann was the Hodags’ lone regional champ, winning the discus (125 feet, 6 inches). She also moved on with a third-place finish in the shot put. Aila Bergman finished third in both the 100 and 300 hurdles to advance and the Hodag girls advanced their 4x100 and 4x400 relays with third-place finishes.
On the boys’ side, both Logan Schwinger and Reid Schultz advanced in the shot put, finishing second and fourth, respectively. Myles Eagleson made it through with a third-place finish in the long jump. The Hodags also moved on by taking second in the 4x100 and third in the 4x200.
Truman Lamers finished fifth in both the triple jump and the high jump to narrowly miss moving on. Sam Balge was fifth in the shot put and Zach Germain took fifth in the 100. On the girls’ side, Lexi Bishop was fifth in the 100, Kara Monk was fifth in the 200 and the Hodags were fifth in the 4x200.
Sectionals take place Thursday in Colby.
Tennis: Rhinelander 3rd/7, WIAA subsectionals
The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team advanced to sectionals in five flights on Monday as it finished third in a WIAA Division 1 subsectional it hosted at the Hodag Dome and the RHS tennis courts.
The Hodags’ No. 1 doubles team of Joey Belanger and Dalton Fritz automatically advanced after drawing the top seed in their seven-team bracket and receiving a bye into the sectional quarterfinals. John Currie advanced at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Wausau West’s Andrew Lipowski.
Payton McCue and Zach King advanced at Nos. 3 and 4 singles while Gavin Denis and Dawson Pontell advanced at No. 2 doubles. Michael Schiek and Aiden Ostermann lost in a match tiebreaker to advance at No. 3 doubles while Nick Lesch was eliminated in the first round at No. 2 singles, also in a match tiebreaker.
Sectionals take place Wednesday in Eau Claire.
Baseball: Rhinelander at Ashland, ccd.
Monday’s baseball game between Rhinelander and Ashland was canceled due to rain. The teams will face each other Thursday in Ashland in the first round of the WIAA tournament. Rhinelander is scheduled to close out the regular season at home against Marathon on Tuesday.
