RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, May 14
Baseball: Tomahawk 13, Rhinelander 6
The Rhinelander High School baseball team nearly climbed out of a seven-run hole, only to give it all back in the seventh inning in a 13-6 loss to Tomahawk Tuesday at Stafford Field.
The Hodags trailed 7-0 after Tomahawk plated five in the second, but Rhinelander chipped back with a run in the third, two in the fourth, one more in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Dylan Vanderbunt and Kaden Vanney each had two hits for Rhinelander in the game, with Vanney driving in a pair of runs. James Heck walked six over 2 2/3 innings, taking the loss for Rhinelander. Owen Kurtz gave up four runs over 3 2/3 innings of relief.
The loss assured Rhinelander (1-17, 1-10 Great Northern) of a last place finish in the conference standings. The Hodags travel to Tomahawk on Friday.
Softball: Tomahawk 13, Rhinelander 2
The Rhinelander High School softball team closed out the regular season with a 13-2 loss to Tomahawk Tuesday at Andrea Musson Field.
The Hodags spotted the Hatchets six runs in the first, two more in the second and four in the third. Rhinelander got runs back on an RBI double by Chase Verbist in the third and an RBI groundout by Sadie Houghton in the fourth.
Laney Haenel took the loss, allowing 12 runs, but only four earned, over 2 1/3 innings. Kelsey Winter gave up one run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Rhinelander (1-15, 1-11 Great Northern) begins the WIAA playoffs at Merrill on Thursday.
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 8, Antigo 0
Rhinelander made quick work of Antigo on Tuesday, defeating the Red Robins 8-0 in Antigo in Great Northern Conference play.
Morgan Van Zile scored a hat trick for Rhinelander while Sophie Miljevich scored twice. The Hodags also got goals from Kiley Pooch, Ella Miljevich and Leah Weigel as they outshot the Robins 25-1.
Because of low numbers for Antigo, the match was played with eight players per side.
Rhinelander (11-2-2, 6-1-0-1 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines on Thursday.
Track: RHS boys 4th/7, girls 4th/7, GNC meet
The RHS boys and girls track teams both finished a close fourth in the Great Northern Conference meet in Medford on Tuesday.
The Hodags boys finished a mere eight points behind co-champions Lakeland and Northland Pines and five points behind third place Medford. Myles Eagleson took the conference title in the triple jump and was the runner-up in the long jump. The Hodags also claimed the 4x100 relay with Zach Germain, Ben Olson, Sam Zwaard and Paul Van Camp.
The Hodag girls won five events and were only a half-point behind Medford for third. Aila Bergman won the 100 and 300 hurdlers for Rhinelander. Libbey Buchmann took the discus and the Hodags claimed the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Lexi Bishop, Olivia Ruetz, Violet Biolo and Lena Timphus made up the winning quartet in the 4x100 while Biole, Ruetz, Lucy Eddy and Kyleah Hartman took the 4x400.
Rhinelander will take part in the Dale Peterson Invite on Thursday in Antigo.
Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/7, GNC Meet No. 5
The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 326 and took third in the fifth round of the GNC golf tournament at Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee on Tuesday.
Sam Schoppe shot a 2-over round of 74 to finish fourth on Tuesday as he maintained the fifth spot in the individual conference standings. Brody Kowieski shot 81 to finish in a four-way tie four ninth. Blake Petroff missed conference points by a stroke, placing 13th with an 82. Chase West shot 89 and Hank Kowieski shot 102.
The sixth round of the conference tournament takes place Wednesday at Bass Lake Golf Club in Deerbrook.
