RHS Sports recap: Thursday, May 9


Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Medford 0


Sophie Miljevich converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute and it stood up as the Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team defeated Medford 1-0 in Medford on Thursday.


Miljevich tucked the penalty inside the right post past Medford keeper Sophia Brunner, the only goal scored by either team in their regular season series this year. 


Rhinelander finished with an 18-11 edge in shots, and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Mya Krouze recorded three saves in the shutout win, which kept Rhinelander five points being Lakeland in second in the GNC title race. 


The Hodags (9-1-2, 5-1-0-1 Great Northern) travel to Wauapca for an invite on Saturday.


Track: RHS boys 2nd/10, girls 2nd/10, Rhinelander Invite


Both the Hodag boys’ and girls’ track teams took second on Thursday in the 10-team Rhinelander Invitational at Mike Webster Stadium.


The Hodag boys dominated the throwing events, going 1-2-3 in both the shot put and discus. Sam Balge won the shot put ahead of Logan Schwinger and Reid Schultz. It went Schultz, Balge, Schwinger for the Hodags in the discus. Truman Lamers added a win in the high jump and the Hodags claimed the 4x100 relay with Ben Olson, Sam Zwaard, Paul Van Camp and Myles Eagleson.


Aila Bergman swept the 100 and 300 hurdles for the Hodag girls and added a runner-up finish in the long jump. Libbey Buchmann took the win for Rhinelander in the discus while Lexi Bishop was third in both the 100 and 200.


Rhinelander will travel to Medford for the Great Northern Conference meet on Tuesday.


Baseball: Wausau East 10, Rhinelander 1


The Rhinelander High School baseball team fell behind early and lost to Wausau East 10-1 in a road non-conference game Thursday. East scored twice in the first, four times in the second and twice more in the third to jump out to a big early lead. 


James Heck took the loss for Rhinelander, allowing nine runs, but only two earned on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Heck also collected two hits at the plate while Connor Augustine had an RBI double in the second inning. 


Rhinelander (1-14, 1-7 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee in a doubleheader on Saturday.


Softball: Lakeland 18, Rhinelander 2


The RHS softball team lost at Lakeland 18-2 on Thursday in Great Northern Conference play. 


The Hodags jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as two runners reached on dropped third strikes and scored when Lily Treder reached on an RBI groundout. Lakeland responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning and 12 int he second. 


Kelsey Winter went an inning-plus for Rhinelander in the loss, giving up 10 runs on five hits. Chase Verbist had Rhinelander only hit in the contest. 


The Hodags (1-14, 1-10 Great Northern) close out the regular season at home Tuesday against Tomahawk.
