RHS Sports recap: Wednesday, May 8

Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 5, Medford 2

The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team swept doubles and split singles Wednesday as it defeated Medford 5-2 on the road in Great Northern Conference play. 

Dalton Fritz/Dawson Pontell, Gavin Denis/Michael Schiek and Hart Hokens/Karter Massey were all straight-set winners in doubles. John Currie fended off last year’s GNC No. 1 singles runner-up, Brayden Balciar, winning both sets in tiebreakers. Zacha King picked up a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.

The win wrapped up an undefeated GNC dual meet season for the Hodags (14-6, 5-0 Great Northern) and assured the Hodags of at least a six-point lead in the conference standings heading into next Thursday conference tournament.

Rhinelander heads to Sheboygan Friday and Saturday for a two-day tournament.
