RHS Sports recap: Friday, May 3
Baseball: Lakeland 13-7, Rhinelander 2-6
The Rhinelander High School baseball team was swept by Lakeland in a home doubleheader Friday 13-2 and 7-6 at Stafford Field.
Lakeland took the lead with a three-run third inning in Game 1 and scored in every inning after that, putting the game away with a six-run seventh. Max Ratty took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits with three five walks and seven strikeouts over five innings. Seth Nofftz, Owen Kurtz and Rowan Wiczek each had two hits for the Hodags.
Rhinelander scored three times in the top of the sixth in Game 2 to take the lead, but Lakeland pulled back ahead in the bottom of the inning without the aid of a hit. A pair of wild pitches scored the tying and go-ahead runs. James Heck started and went 4 2/3 innings for Rhinelander with a walk and two strikeouts. Oscar Hanson took the loss, allowing two runs in the sixth. Kurtz and Barak Rappley had two-hit games for Rhinelander in Game 2.
The Hodags (1-12, 1-7 Great Northern) host Merrill on Monday.
Softball: Antigo 15, Rhinelander 0
The Rhienlander High School softball team fell at Antigo 15-0 in four innings on Friday.
The Robins scored five times in the second, nine times in the third and clinched the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Hodags were not credited with any hits in the contest. Kelsey Winter took the loss, allowing 15 runs, but only three earned, on 13 hits with five walks and two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.
Rhinelander (1-12, 1-8 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee Tuesday.
Track: RHS boys 4th/11, girls 4th/11, Otto Bacher Invite
Both the Rhinelander High School boys’ and girls’ track teams scored fourth-place finishes in the 11-team Otto Bacher Invitational in Merrill on Friday.
The Hodag girls won three events on the day. Aila Bergman swept the 100 and 300 hurdles for Rhinelander while Libbey Buchmann claimed the shot put. The Hodags added a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay with Lexi Bishop, Olivia Ruetz, Violet Biolo and Reese Gehrig.
Logan Schwinger claimed the shot put for Rhinelander, the lone win for the Hodag boys. Rhinelander got runner-up finishes from Truman Lamers in the high jump, Zach Germain in the 100 meters and Connor Dumpprope in the 300 hurdles.
The Hodags return to action Tuesday in the Tomahawk Invite.
