Middle school bowlers pick up win
The Rhinelander middle school bowling team continued District 9 action on Sunday, knocking off Antigo 5-4 at North Star Lanes in Antigo.
The Hodags came out of the gates strong, winning five of the first six games to clinch the match. The team had its high score of the day in the clinching 145-101 win in Game 6. Overall, Rhinelander averaged 119.7 pins per game and filled 44% of its frames.
“Overall, it was a good day. It’s been a few weeks since we bowled in a meet and I think the kids were ready to be back out on the lanes,” Hodag middle school coach Cory Dellenbach said.
Eli Miller paced the team, filling 12 of his 18 frames with four strikes on the day while Natalie Dellenbach was 10 of 18 with five strikes. Charlotte Pruess was 7 of 18 with four strikes, Silas Johnson was 6 of 18 and Brighton Walkowski was 5 of 18 with three strikes. Coach Dellenbach noted that Pruess and Johnson had the strongest performances of the season, statistically.
“Charlotte, she’s been switching back and forth on the way she throws. Last week she was throwing a backup ball and now this week she’s back to throwing normal. She had three strikes, four spares and 11 opens. For her, that was really good,” he said. “Silas, he didn’t have any strikes, but he had six spares. He’s really starting to hone in on finding his mark and more consistently hitting it.”
The win moved the middle school squad to 3-3 on the season. The Hodags will host the final two District 9 matches of the season, with the next match on tap for Sunday, March 24.
